1. Feeling Emotion in Art – Abstract Expressionism Drawings

Artists will be guided through the Wheel of Emotion and will make a series of drawings with pastels that convey varying emotions. Beginning with the simpler feelings like Happy, Anger, Sad, and Surprised, then working toward complex feelings like Vulnerable, Courageous, Suspicious, and Overwhelmed.

2. Expanding an Idea – Texture and Media Exploration

Using one of the expressionism drawings from the previous week, artists are challenged to recreate and develop a new art piece inspired by one of their emotion drawings. Artists will be introduced to Acrylic paints and plaster media to generate highly textural works that stand out from their provided wood panel.

3. Life in Small Places – Crafting a Miniature Bottle Garden

Taking a break from emotions, this lesson is about building new space for things to flourish. Artists will be provided a glass vessel, growing mediums, decorations, and a selection of plants to design their own Bottle-garden or Ecosphere. Once their vessel is decorated it will be permanently sealed and set aside to be observed together for the remainder of the series.

4. Twists and Turns – Paper Sculptures and Story Telling

Artists will be given a tutorial on structuring organic shapes with card-stock paper. Then artists will be provided oil pastels for colour and instructed to construct a sculpture that attempts to speak to a part of their personal story.

5. A New Day – Painting a Morning Sky

Artists will be guided through a step by step painting of a morning sky. This lesson will provide a more guided experience through the art making process resulting in a beautiful acrylic painting on an 11×14″ canvas. During this process, artists are encouraged to think on new ideas for an original abstract self portrait to create in the final workshop.

6. This Is Me – Abstract Self Portraits

Artists will be provided all mediums explored throughout the workshop series and instructed to design and create their own abstract self portrait. These are works of art that reflect the idea of the artist and isn’t beholden to realism and literal imagery.

Workshops limited to 12 attendees. Additional attendees may be added for an extra fee.
(Each participant requires a minimum of 60 cm x 60 cm (2′ x 2′) of clear working space.)
